Heard a great new band on the radio today…
I was driving over to a client in Sherman Oaks this afternoon, and I happened to be listening to the radio (I forgot to bring any of my CDs). I was listening to 97.1 KLSX, which was the only radio station I listen to anyway, and it was Frosty, Heidi and Frank, this cooky trio that spend two-to-three hours talking about nothing… and everything.
Well, it just so happened that it was the "Should I Stay or Should I Go" portion of their show, which happens every Friday. It was where fledgeling bands across the country send in their demo tracks, and after the "Triplets" play it, listeners will phone in and vote whether the band should stay (continue making music), or go (get the hell out of the music business).
I have listened countless times to this portion of the show for many weeks, and the bands that submit their demo CDs almost always have that "amateur" sound to them. Of course there are exceptions, but I can only remember one or two.
But today, I was literally blown away by the featured band. When they played the first track, entitled Chicken Girl, I thought I was listening to Beck… I thought to myself, "Okay, maybe they’re making a mistake here. There is no fuckin’ way this band isn’t signed with a major record label with this kind of sound." Naturally, I was very impressed, but the cynic in me was saying that it might just be a fluke. That maybe they asked that their best-produced song to be played first.
But when they played the second song, Down on You… damn, I thought I was listening to Tom Petty this time. These are QUALITY songs. Very excellent production value, and listening to it made me recall the time when rock n’ roll was still worth listening to on the radio.
The band is called The Jason Sinay Band, and if you’re one of those people who love listening to Tom Petty and "easy-listening" rock n’ roll, you’ll love this band. Watch out for ‘em - they’ll be big once one of these stupid hiphop-loving, emo-sucking recording labels take notice of these guys. And I hope they notice them soon - the crap on the radio is just fuckin’ lame nowadays…
Join me in pushing for the resurgence of the true rock sound. Those of you who think hip-hop music will never die can suck my dick…
